Antique Continental Painted Marriage Chest
A beautiful pine storage chest with its original painted decoration and dated 1800. It originates from the Continent, probably Scandinavian or German and is a particularly large size. The chest has its original hinges, metal carrying handles and internal candle box and it is set on raised feet. It is painted in a beautiful mixture of blue and burnt red / orange with a wonderful arch design in the centre panel around the letters "A.K.S.H 1800". Chests like this were often given to commemorate a marriage, hence why they were dated and initialed.
It is in good condition for its age. It has been gently cleaned and has a lovely smooth waxed finish. The hinges are strong and the interior is generally clean and tidy although the lock does not work. There are some signs of age and use, some surface marks and knocks and some wear to the paint in places but overall it has a lovely patina and displays well. There have been a couple of old repairs and there are some signs of historic worm which has all been treated as a precaution and hasn't affected the chest structurally or aesthetically.
