Product Details

A good example of a large english Oak Coffer dating from the 17th Century. It has a traditional panelled construction standing on four tall block feet. The front is decorated with a simple frieze rail of arched carvings and some further geometric carvings in the centre of the front panels. It has carved initials "CR" below the brass escutcheon between the carved date "1676".

The lid opens on strap hinges and the boarded interior has a small open candle compartment. The hinges are not original and there are small holes where the old ring hinges would have been but the lid opens smoothly and the replacement hinges are strong and fit for purpose.

The coffer is in good condition for its age and has developed a beautiful rich patina. There are some signs of age and use, some knocks and marks, some minor shrinkage splits and a couple of old repairs but nothing untoward. It has been cleaned and gently polished and is ready for use.
