Victorian Rosewood Writing Slope
A good example of a Victorian writing slope dating from the late 19th Century. It is made of rosewood with brass corner pieces and a shield shaped brass cartouche with matching escutcheon. The box has a lovely patina and comes with a working key.
The box is fitted with a good quality maroon leather writing surface with a gilt tooled edge. It has a pen tray, stamp slope and a pair of glass inkwells with cork stoppers, one with an old 1892 penny stuck to the top! Both top and bottom sections of the writing surface lift up to reveal extra storage space below.
The box is in good condition for its age. There are some general signs of age and use, some knocks and light marks and some minor shrinkage splits and small chips but nothing untoward or detrimental. The leather writing surface is in excellent order and the interior is generally clean and tidy. It has been cleaned and lightly polished and is ready for use.
