Victorian Papier Mache Lacquered Stationery Box
A lovely example of a Victorian papier mache stationery / letter box dating from the late 19th century. The outer has a black lacquered finish with beautifully inlaid mother of pearl decoration in the form of roses with further hand painted and gilded lining and motifs. The sloped lid opens to reveal a series of racks for holding papers and letters and the whole interior is lined with decorative paper. It comes with its original working key.
It is in good original condition and there are no major damages. There are some general signs of age and use and some minor knocks and marks to the exterior and some wear to the interior but overall it is clean and tidy and displays well. It has been cleaned and gently polished and is ready for use.
