Product Details

An unusual mahogany kneehole desk dating from the mid to late 19th Century. It has been made in two parts and the top half sits on blocks to hold it in place and it has also been screwed together as well. The quality of the construction and excellent timbers used leads us to believe it was most likely made to be used on a ship and would have been a multi purpose piece for storing clothes and documents as well as using as a desk or dressing table.

The top part contains two short over one long drawer and the bottom part contains four small drawers around a central cupboard, set back into the kneehole. Each drawer has its original turned wooden knob.

It is in good original condition. The drawers open smoothly and are generally clean and tidy inside. There are signs of age and use, some small knocks and marks and a few old repairs but nothing untoward. The top is made from one solid slab of mahogany and this has slightly warped at one end (see photo) but it isn't detrimental and the whole piece still displays well. It has been gently cleaned and polished and is ready for use.
