Victorian Mahogany Clerk's Armrest
An unusual mahogany Clerk's armrest dating from the mid to late 19th Century. Victorian clerks would spend many hours writing in large and heavy ledgers and these armrests were designed to ease the strain. The armrest worked very simply. Its prongs were inserted between pages of a large volume, some way back from the page in use. The weight of the pages held the armrest firmly in place, creating a small ledge sticking out from the side of the book. The clerk could rest his forearm there as he wrote, instead of keeping it in mid-air
It has a natural rich colour and has developed a lovely patina. It is in good solid order with no cracks or damages. It has been lightly cleaned and polished and displays beautifully.
