Victorian Jaques Staunton Chess Set
An excellent quality Staunton pattern chess set by Jaques of London dating from the late 19th Century. The pieces are turned from ebony and boxwood with weighted bases and a polished finish. Both Kings are stamped "Jaques London" and the king side rooks & knights have red crown stamps. Every piece has a green felt base.
The set comes in a wooden box with a sliding lid and padded interior. The date '1885' is written below the lid.
The whole set is in good condition and displays well. There are some minor signs of age and use - a small chip to the top of the black King's Cross and Queen's crown. Three black pawns have small chips to the collars and minor splits to the bases. Otherwise the pieces are in good condition with a lovely patina. The box is in good order and is strong and sturdy with a small chip to the top edge.
