Product Details
A good example of a Victorian Loftus Hydrometer, used to measure and regulate the alcohol content in drinks. The set comes with its original brass float and all 9 graduated weights. It also comes with its original thermometer. The float is stamped "Loftus London" and each of the weights are also marked with their weight and 'Loftus'.
The thermometer is marked "J.Long. London"
and there is an original paper label on the bottom of the box from Joseph Long with an adjustment date believed to be 5.11.1877.
The whole set comes in its original inlaid mahogany box with fitted lined interior. The box has a lovely rich patina and there is an inset plaque in the centre of the lid which reads "Sikes' Hydrometer. Loftus. 6 Beaufoy Terrace. London".
It is in good condition for its age. There is some general tarnishing on the brasswork, some discolouration on the thermometer and general signs of age and use but no major damages. There are some marks and knocks around the outside of the box but overall it displays well.
