Victorian Coromandel Sewing Box by Parkins & Gotto
A fine example of a beautiful Victorian sewing or jewellery box dating from the mid 19th Century. It is made of the finest Coromandel wood with brass stringing and an inlaid brass cartouche and escutcheon.
The interior has its original blue silk lining below the lid with ornate gilt border. This folds down to reveal an additional silk lined document holder. The box has a fitted velvet and silk lined tray with various compartments and sections. The tray has gilt brass carrying handles and lifts out to reveal further storage below.
Every element of the box is top quality and the hinges and lock plate are all made from gilded brass with ornate engraved decoration. It has a maker's plaque for " Parkins & Gotto Makers. 24 & 25 Oxford Street London".
It is in good condition for its age and has clearly been well looked after. There are some minor signs of age and use, some light surface marks, a couple of old repairs and an old shrinkage split but nothing detrimental and it displays beautifully. It does not come with a key. It has been cleaned and gently polished and is ready for use.
