A superb Victorian writing slope made of the most beautiful burr walnut with secret drawers and a working key. The burr walnut has the most stunning colour and grain and the corners and edges are bound in brass with matching brass escutcheon.
Inside, the box is fitted with a green leather writing surface with a gold tooled edge. It comes with a glass inkwell and a pen tray. There is a secret compartment with 3 small drawers below the front leather surface that springs open by lifting a piece of wood next to the inkwell. The box comes with its original working key for locking the outer box but we do not have a key for the internal writing surface.
The box is in very good condition for its age with a beautiful patina and displays very nicely. The leather writing surface is in good order and is very usable. There are some small old knocks and marks around the outside of the box and a couple of small strips of brass inlay missing but nothing detrimental and overall it displays beautifully.
