A good quality and very decorative pair of oil paintings dating from the mid 19th Century. Believed to depict a husband and wife, both sitters are smartly dressed in traditional Victorian clothing and the lady has a lace collar fastened with a cameo brooch. The male painting is signed along the arm of the armchair "T.Whalley. 1864"
believed to be the signature of Thomas Walley (1817-1878), a well known Victorian portrait artist.
The paintings are both on canvas and the female painting has been relined at some point. They have been well painted and their large size makes them very decorative.
There are signs of age and both have suffered some small damages. There are some small losses and repairs, particularly on the male painting and the female has some surface crazing to the varnish. However they both display well and have a nice aged patina.
