Large Victorian Mahogany Writing Slope with Secret Drawers
A good example of a large early 19th Century writing slope. It is made of mahogany with recessed brass military style handles, brass banding, brass edging and corner pieces and a brass cartouche and escutcheon.
Inside, the box is fitted with a lovely green leather writing surface with a gilt tooled edge and it comes with a pair of glass inkwells with gilt screw tops. There is also a pen tray a lidded compartment and a stamp slope. Below the writing surface is a secret compartment hiding four small velvet lined drawers which springs open when a piece of wood in front of the lock is pushed. There is also a long drawer on the side of the box which is held in place by a brass rod and extra storage space below each section of the writing surface. The box is excellent quality and has a bramah lock but unfortunately we don't have a key.
The box is in very good condition for its age and has been sympathetically restored and re-polished. There are no major damages to the wood exterior and the mahogany has a beautiful patina. The interior is clean and tidy and the leather is in good order. There are of course signs of age and use, some small knocks and marks but overall it displays beautifully.
