Product Details

A superb example of an early 19th Century writing slope. It is made of rosewood with wonderful intricate brass inlay, brass stringing and inset military style brass handles. Inside, the box is fitted with a lovely dark maroon leather writing surface with a gilt tooled edge. It comes with a pair of glass inkwells with brass tops and it has a small lidded compartment which stores two small brass candlesticks. These go together and sit in small holes in the front of the box and would have provided an important light source for the original owner. Below the writing surface is an additional wooden tray holding a small selection of paints and a fitted tray for brushes or pencils.

The box is in very good condition for its age and comes with its original working key. There are signs of age and use, a couple of small chips and old splits around the outside of the box but no major damages or anything detrimental. There is some light wear to the leather writing surface but nothing untoward and it is certainly usable. It has been cleaned and gently polished and displays beautifully.
