Product Details

A lovely country oak bureau dating from the late 18th / early 19th Century. It has a sloped front above four drawers, each with brass swan neck handles and brass escutcheons and it stands on nicely shaped bracket feet. Two pulls support the front which opens to reveal a series of small pigeon holes and drawers around a central cupboard. There is also a small secret drawer concealed behind one of the mouldings. The bureau comes with its original working keys to the main fall front and the small interior cupboard.

It is in very good condition for its age and the oak has developed a wonderful rich colour over the years. There are general signs of age and use, some old knocks, small splits and a few small repairs but no major damages and the piece is strong and sturdy. The drawer handles have been changed at some point in its life and there are faint marks where knobs have previously been but it isn't detrimental and the handles are good period examples. The interior is in good condition with a few old surface marks and ink stains but nothing detrimental. The drawers open smoothly and are generally clean and tidy inside. There are some minor old signs of historic woodworm in the back boards which has all been treated as a precaution. The bureau has been cleaned and gently polished to retain the original patina and it is ready for use.
