Eight 19th Century Ash and Elm Lancashire Ladderback Dining Chairs
A good set of 8 Lancashire type ladderback dining chairs dating from the early to mid 19th Century. They have ash and elm frames with nicely shaped top rails. The chairs stand on turned front legs with pad feet joined by stretchers. They are excellent quality with particularly good colour and patination. Some chairs bear a label for "Wylie & Lochhead Ltd, 45 Buchanan Street, Glasgow" - renowned cabinetmakers and furnishers who must have retailed the chairs from their department store in the early 20th Century.
The chairs are a good size and are comfortable to sit in, particularly the generous carvers. The single chairs are approximately 39 1/2" (100cm) high, 19" (48cm) wide and the seats are 15" (38cm) deep and 17 1/2" (44cm) high. The carver chairs are approximately 43" (109cm) high, 26" (66cm) wide across the arms and the seats are 18" (46cm) deep and 17" (43cm) high.
The chairs are in very good condition. There have been some repairs over the years to ensure the chairs are firm with strong joints. The tips of the legs have also been replaced where they would have worn over the years. There are some signs of age and use, some minor knocks and marks and there is some wear and minor losses to the rush seats but nothing detrimental and certainly usable. The chairs have been cleaned and lightly polished and are ready for use.
