Antique Travelling Chess Set
A good example of a travelling chess set dating from the late 19th Century. It is a "Whittington Pattern" set and was most likely retailed by Jaques. The pegged pieces are finely carved from bone, with one set stained red and the other left natural. The board is made from squares of boxwood and rosewood and the whole set is contained within a folding mahogany box with brass hinges and closing latches.
The set is in good condition for its age. The pieces are all original and in good order with some slight discolouration and a few very small chips and nibbles but nothing detrimental. There are some marks and signs of wear on the board and minor knocks around the outside of the box but overall it displays well and is certainly a very usable set.
