Product Details

A good example of an antique toleware box with a domed lid and brass carrying handle. It has a brass name plaque engraved with the owner's name "W.J.S.Jeffery" and it also has a maker's plaque "G. Hildred, Ironmonger & Tinsmith. Hainton Square, Grimsby". It has an unusual brass catch with a locking plate. It opens to a cream painted interior with a storage section below the lid.

These boxes were used by Railway drivers to store tools and food and anything else they would need for a day on the footplate.

It has been well used but it is in good condition for its age and it has a lovely patina. The paint has worn in places and there are some small knocks and dents but no major damages. The interior is generally clean and tidy and the hinges are strong. It has been lightly cleaned and is certainly a usable piece as well as a lovely decorative object.
