Product Details

A superb leather covered writing box dating from the late 19th century. The box has an inset brass carrying handle on the top and there is a brass key escutcheon on the front of the box. There are impressed initials on the top "D.T".

The top opens to reveal two writing pads as well as a pen tray and a glass inkwell. There are letter racks and pen holders below the lid which spring forward to the front of the lid and rest on two brass latches. The bottom part of the box folds out again to provide a sloped writing surface and both sections here lift up to provide additional storage compartments. The box comes with a working key.

It has a gilt maker's stamp for "Finnigan. Manchester".

It is in very good condition for its age. The leather is in good order with a little bit of wear along the edges and a few scuffs on the corners but no major damages and it has a lovely patina. Inside, it is generally clean and tidy with a few small marks and signs of age and use but nothing detrimental. Overall the box displays very well and is certainly a nice usable item.
