Antique Devon County Excise Scales
A good quality set of large antique balance beam scales dating from the early 20th century. They are official excise scales made for the County of Devon and they have a maker's name engraved on the beam for De Grave & Co Ltd.
The scales are made of brass with two brass pans suspended by chain. The scales mount into the top of the box for easy use wherever they would have been set up and the components pack away into the case below. The pans and the cross beam have various crown duty stamps from 1903 to 1927 and each component is numbered 3065 which matches the case.
The scales are in very good condition and display well. The brass has tarnished a little over time and there are some minor signs of age and use but nothing detrimental. The wooden box is excellent quality with metal strapped edges and a lovely patina. The leather handle has worn in places and has a few small holes but overall it displays well.
