Antique Bone Travelling Chess Set
A good example of a travelling chess set dating from the late 19th Century. It is a "Whittington Pattern" set like those retailed by Jaques. The pegged pieces are finely carved from bone, with one set stained red and the other left natural. The board is made from squares of boxwood and rosewood and the whole set is contained within a folding mahogany box with brass hinges and closing latches. The pieces must be taken out to close the set so it is possible that they might not be original.
The set is in very good condition for its age. The pieces are in good order with some slight discolouration and a few very small chips and nibbles but nothing detrimental. There are some marks and signs of wear on the board and minor knocks around the outside of the box but overall it displays well and is certainly a very usable set.
