Product Details

A beautiful anglo-indian stationery box dating from the late 19th / early 20th century. It is made of an exotic dense hardwood such as sandalwood or padouk wood and features intricate relief carvings of animals and foliage. It is further decorated with sadeli work, a traditional micro-mosaic technique using ebony and bone to create geometric borders.

The box has a canted sloping lid which opens to reveal a series of racks for holding papers and letters. The dividers are decorated with additional sadeli mosaic panels and it comes with its original working key.

It is in very good condition for its age and the interior is clean and tidy. There are some general signs of age and use, some small knocks and minor marks and an old shrinkage split at the back corner (see photo) but nothing detrimental and it displays well.
