Product Details

A superb oak livery cupboard dating from the early 18th Century and most likely originating from Wales. It is made in two parts, the top section with panelled doors opening to a full length interior with a row of wooden hanging pegs and a later shelf to the left. It has brass knobs and it comes with its original working key. The lower half is also panelled with two false drawers and the cupboard stands on block feet with an overhanging cornice.

It is a versatile piece of furniture - perfect for use as a wardrobe or hallway storage but it could also be shelved to allow for linen storage or food storage.

It is a very primitive piece and shows its age with a pegged construction and thick rough hand-sawn planks on the back and top.

It is in good condition for its age and displays well. It is strong and sturdy and the interior is generally clean and tidy. There are of course signs of age and use, some knocks and marks, splits, chips and some old repairs but nothing untoward or detrimental and it has a lovely patina. The top cornice is likely a later replacement but done well and some time ago. The bottom of the legs are worn and there are some signs of historic woodworm which has all been treated as a precaution and hasn't affected the piece structurally or aesthetically. It has been gently cleaned and polished and is ready for use.
