Product Details

A nice example of a small English oak coffer dating from the early to mid 18th Century. It is a traditional six plank nailed construction standing on V cut-out end boards with carved chip detail on the edges. The hinged lid opens to reveal a plain boarded interior.

The coffer is in good condition for its age and has developed a lovely rich patina and good colour. It is generally clean and tidy inside. There are signs of age and use, some knocks and marks and a small chip on the back but nothing detrimental or untoward. The back part of the lock plate is missing on the inside of the box. There are signs of old worm, particularly in the base and the bottom of the legs which has all been treated as a precaution and hasn't affected the piece structurally or aesthetically and the whole chest is strong and sturdy. It has been cleaned and gently polished and is ready for use.
