18th Century Oak Potboard Dresser
circa 1780
Good example of a period oak dresser dating from the late 18th century. The base has three drawers standing on turned legs with block feet and an open potboard base. It has its original plate rack with 3 open shelves with grooves for standing up plates. The drawers have brass drop handles which, although are not original, have replaced very similar original handles. It is a lovely primitive piece with a beautiful patina and some nice detail such as carved corner pieces on the rack, rounded corners to the dresser top and nicely carved arms on the plate rack.
It is in good condition throughout and is a clean sturdy piece of furniture. It is not without some signs of age and use and some light marks and stains on the top surface but this has all helped to develop a beautiful rich patina over the years. The plate rack has sagged with age but is still strong and sturdy. The drawers are clean and tidy inside and all open well. It is a nice petite size and although the rack has likely been reduced in height at some point, the proportions of the dresser are very attractive. It has been well maintained and has been given a thorough clean and gentle wax and is ready for the home.
