Product Details

A 17th Century English oak chest of drawers. It has four long drawers with attractive moulded fronts and, as was typical with chests of this era, the second drawer down is considerably deeper than the others. It has panelled sides, a planked top with moulded edge and it stands on simple block feet. The drawers have brass drop handles with pierced back plates and matching escutcheons which, although put on later, have been on the chest of drawers a good time and suit the style and age.

The drawers run on their original 'side runners' - a sign of their age before drawers were made to run on the bottom. The drawers open and close smoothly and the drawers are generally clean and tidy inside.

This particular chest is a 'cottage' set, having been made in two parts joined with wooden pegs. It enables the chest to be manoeuvred into small spaces and up tight stairways.

It is a good quality chest of drawers that has been well maintained over the years. It is strong and sturdy and has developed a wonderful rich aged patina. It has picked up various small knocks, marks and signs of age and use and there are some natural shrinkage splits in the top but nothing detrimental. The chest has been cleaned and gently polished and is ready for use.
