A good antique elm blanket box dating from the mid 19th century with a lovely rich patina. It is well made and has its original strap hinges. Inside it has a boarded floor and a small candle box. There is also some old writing under the lid and also on the top of the candle box from a Mr Thomas Higgins of Eardisley.
The box is a good size for a coffee table, end of the bed storage or toy trunk.
It is in good condition for its age and it is strong and sturdy. It is generally clean and tidy inside. There are signs of age and use, some general knocks and marks, some small chips and a few old repairs but nothing untoward or detrimental. There are signs of old woodworm in the base and around the box in places which has all been treated as a precaution and hasn't affected the box structurally or aesthetically. It has been cleaned and gently polished and is ready for use.
