Product Details

A good Edwardian pedestal desk dating from the early 20th Century. It is made of American Walnut and has an arrangement of 9 drawers around a central kneehole. Each drawer has its original art nouveau style brass handles with matching escutcheons and the drawers have nicely moulded fronts with reeded borders. The top of the desk has a good quality maroon leather writing surface with gilt edge and the whole piece stands on castors.

It is an excellent quality piece with dovetailed drawers and nicely finished moulding that continues on all 4 sides of the desk, meaning the back looks nicely finished so it could be used as a freestanding piece as well as against a wall.

The inside of the top drawers are stamped with the maker's name 'MAPLE & Co".

The desk is in excellent condition for its age and has been well looked after. The wood has a nice warm colour and a lovely rich patina. The drawers open well and are generally clean and tidy inside. There are some normal signs of age and use, some minor knocks and light surface marks and a small shrinkage split in one side but no major damages or anything detrimental. The leather writing surface is likely the original and has a lovely aged patina with lots of signs of age and use and old ink stains giving the desk plenty of character whilst still being very usable. The desk has been gently cleaned and polished and is ready for use.
